Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday (24 January 2013)

Prophet Muhammad is the central figure of the Islamic faith. Born in Mecca , the prophet was a well-known diplomat, merchant, philosopher, orator, legislator and military leader.


Wesak Day (24 May 2013)

Observed by Buddhists and Taoists, Wesak Day marks the Buddha's birthday, enlightenment and passing. The occasion is celebrated with chanting and prayers at the many Buddhist temples dotting the state. Free vegetarian meals are served at most temples and devotees are encouraged to participate in acts of charity such as making offerings of food to monks and donations for the poor and underprivileged.

Agong’s Birthday (1 June 2013)

The Malaysian system of elective monarchy means that a new monarch is chosen from the heads of nine Royal families every four years. Tuanku Abdul Rahman, the Sultan of Negeri Sembilan was Malaysia 's first Agong (King).

Penang Governor’s Birthday (13 July 2013)

Penang is one of only four states in Malaysia not to have a hereditary Malay Ruler or Sultan, as a former Straits Settlement governed directly by the British administration. Today, each Governor is appointed by the King of Malaysia.

Merdeka Day (Independence Day - 31 August 2013)

Although August 31, 1957 (the date Malaya gained independence from the British), is celebrated on a grand scale in Kuala Lumpur - the capital of Malaysia, it is also celebrated in every state with patriotic performances and marching parades.

Hari Raya Korban  (15 October 2013)

Unlike Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Raya Korban marks the end of the Haj pilgrimage period made every year by millions of Muslims to the Holy Land of Mecca.

Performing the haj is one of the five tenets of the religion which every Muslim should perform at least once, as long as they have the means to do so, and are in good health.

The day honours the commitment made by Abraham who was ready to sacrifice his only son when commanded to do so by God. At the crucial moment God spared Abraham's son and revealed to him that he was testing his faith (a ram was sacrificed in little Ishmael's place).

Awal Muharram (Maal Hijrah - 5 November 2013)

It marks the first day of the Muslim calendar when Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Medina to escape persecution.
